How to unlink Facebook from Instagram

Most people access social media using their smartphones or tablets. The web version of Instagram for desktop is really more or less redundant. While people tend to use Facebook on their mobile devices, it is not uncommon for some to access their Facebook pages using their Mac or PC.

How to disconnect Facebook from Instagram using Mac or PC

Instagram users can easily unlink their two accounts through a web browser in just a few steps. First, you need to visit the Instagram website. Here's how to unlink your two accounts using the Instagram website:

Log in to Instagram and click on your profile icon in the upper right corner. Then click on “Settings”.

Scroll down to this page and click on the blue "Account Center" hyperlink in the lower left corner.

Click on "Accounts" in the lower left corner.

Click "Remove" next to your Facebook account.

From Your iOS or Android

  1. Let's get one thing straight. Don't try to do this through the Facebook app. No option allows you to disconnect your Facebook account and Instagram page on Facebook.

The only way to disconnect the two is with the Instagram mobile app. Of course, you can do this via your iPhone or Android device. And it works basically the same.

Go to the Instagram app and tap on your profile picture to access your account.

  2. Go to the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) and tap the icon.

  3. Tap on ‘Settings.’

  4. Find the ‘Account Center’ and tap to enter it.

  5. Tap on ‘Account Center.’

  6. Tap on ‘Accounts.’

  7. Locate your Facebook account(s). Tap ‘Remove.’

  8. Tap ‘Continue.’

  9. Tap the button that says ‘Remove [Your Facebook Name].’

Voila! You’ve successfully unlinked your Facebook and Instagram accounts.

How to Remove Instagram Posts from Facebook

Even if you disconnect the two, you'll notice that your Facebook profile will include some Instagram posts. This situation exists because you have selected the option to share every Instagram post on Facebook.

To remove Instagram posts from Facebook, you need to delete them manually. This process uses your Facebook account, not Instagram.

Using the Android/iOS App to Remove Instagram Posts from Facebook

  1. Run the Facebook app on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Navigate to your profile by tapping the profile icon in the menu in the upper/lower part of the screen (depending on whether you are using an Android or an iOS device, respectively).
  3. Once on your profile, you will need to go to the Instagram Photos album. To do so, scroll down on your profile page until you see the Photos entry.

  4. Tap it, and you will see a list of Photos of You.

  5. In the upper part of this page, you can choose between different folders. Go to the Albums folder.

  6. In this view, navigate to a folder titled Instagram Photos. You will see a list of your posts on Instagram.

  7. To delete these posts, tap on each photo separately, and go to the three-dot menu.

  8. Click on the option to ‘Delete photo.’

This process might be slightly annoying, particularly if you have a lot of photos in the album. Fortunately, there is another way to do it.

Using PC/Mac to Remove Instagram Posts from Facebook

  1. Using a desktop web browser, you can quickly delete your entire Instagram Photos folder without going through repeated deletion patterns.

Go to Facebook.com in your favorite browser using your Windows or Mac PC.

Go to your profile by selecting it from the list on the left or by clicking on your profile picture next to the status bar.

  2. On your profile page, you will see a quick list of items about you. If the Photos menu is apparent, select See All to the right. If not, go to the More tab and select Photos.

  3. Go to the Albums tab. Here, you will also find the Instagram Photos folder.

  4. Click on the Instagram photos.

  5. To delete it entirely, click on the three-dot icon to the right and select Delete Album.

  6. Confirm by clicking Delete Album.

There you have it! All Instagram posts have been removed from your Facebook profile!

Even though Instagram is now under the Facebook umbrella, there may still be a reason why you'd prefer to keep the two separate. Maybe you don't want your Facebook page to be cluttered. You may be posting different types of content to the two. Whatever the reason, as long as you use the right platform, disconnecting Facebook from Instagram is quick and easy. Just stick to the Instagram app and you're good to go.

How can I change the Instagram account I linked?

You can link multiple Facebook pages and a Facebook profile to your Instagram account. Facebook Pages are linked to Meta Accounts, so any Facebook account you link to Instagram will also bring connected Pages to the table. To change a linked Facebook account on your Instagram, unlink the current one and select a new one, carefully follow the instructions provided.

However, you can choose where you want the Instagram posts you share to appear. Go to Linked Accounts in the Instagram app (as explained earlier) to go to the Share to option on Facebook.

Here you can choose whether you want the current share to appear on the linked Facebook profile or on one of the pages linked to that Facebook profile. Choose what suits your preferences.

Will disconnecting Instagram from Facebook remove the posts from Facebook?

As mentioned earlier, no it won't. The fact that you have disconnected your Instagram account from Facebook does not mean that the Facebook posts will be deleted. As explained above, this is because the moment your Instagram post is automatically shared on Facebook, it becomes a separate entity of its own. In other words, it becomes a post that you can only delete manually.
